Saint Tropez History
In 68AD Saint Tropez was a Greek Colony called Heracléa. They changed the name to Saint Torpes owing to a Christian gladiator called Torpes who was sacrificed by the Emporer Nero and put in a boat with a dog to make an example of. The dog did not touch the rotting body so the local people saw it as a sign from God and called the town Saint Tropez.
Saint Tropez during the middle ages St Tropez became priory of St-Victor and was ruled by the viscounts of Marseilles, the Castellanes and the Suffrens. Saracen raids drove the inhabitants into the Massif des Maures and war destroyed the town in the 14th century. Despite numerous attacks by the Turks and the Spanish Saint Tropez became a poular port for trading, and ship building.
The port was destroyed in 1944, and rebuilt after the war. In the early 1950's, the Bohemian artists quarter in Paris had made St Tropez their summer quarters, and the famous writers, actors and painters brought the town a reputation that remains to this day.
