Ramatuelle is a picturesque Provençal village situated on the peninsula of St Tropez. Built on a steep hillside, overlooking the Bay of Pampelonne, Ramatuelle enjoys spectacular views of both the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding countryside. Escalet past Cap Camarat is a very popular nature reserve where celebrities have their Ramatuelle Villas overlooking the azur sea.
Ramatuelle dates from medieval times and has a peculiar ‘snail-like’ layout that reflects its origins as a fortified village. As a result the village has something of a maze-like quality, and visitors will enjoy a something of voyage of discovery as they stumble across cafés and boutiques hiding in secret alleyways. Ramatuelle is a joy to behold throughout the year, the ochres of the façades and pastel coloured shutters are set off by the bright hues of the jasmine, honeysuckle and bougainvilleas which adorn the streets. The village truly comes to life on Thursdays and Sundays, when the local Provençal market comes to town, and Jazz lovers should note the yearly Summer Festival de Ramatuelle which takes place in late July/early August.
The biggest tourist attraction in the area is undoubtedly the beach at Pampelonne, which attracts up to 30,000 visitors a day during July and August. The beach home to Club 55, Nikki Beach and Tahiti Beach, stretches for 5km between Cap St Tropez and Cap Camarat and has a total of 27 private and public beaches. There are further coves to discover around Cap Camarat although many of these are only accessible by foot.
