La Garde Freinet is located in the Maures Mountains and grew up around the Fort Freinet, which dates from the 11th century. As you travel towards the village, along roads lined with chestnut and cork oak trees, you may feel yourself drawn back to a time when the same trees provided much of the livelihood for the citizens of La Garde Freinet.
The town itself has changed little over the years and after only a few minute exploring this picturesque old village you are sure to feel the same sense of captivation and charm that has convinced so many artists and writers to call it home. The old village centre dates from the 12th century when the inhabitants began to descend from the old fort and settle on the gentler slopes of the pass. The settlement continued to grow throughout the 13th century, during which the Place du Marché was established. It was not until late 19th century that the village experienced its second major stage of development which saw the new quarters of ‘Les Aires’ and the ‘Place Neuve’ established during an expansion that was largely financed by the development of the local lsquo;cork’ industry.
