Grimaud takes its name from a Genoese nobleman named, Giblin de Grimaldi, to whom it was bequeathed by William the Good of Provence for helping to drive out the Saracens during the 10th century. Many of Grimaud´s principal buildings date from soon after this time. Both the chåteau and the Eglise St Michel date from the 11th century and while all that is left of the former is ruins, the latter still stands and is a prime example of Provençal Romanesque architecture.
The village, which surrounds these structures, is equally charming. The oldest street in the village, ´la rue des Templiers´, is noted for its arcades and the fine carving of its portals and is home to the ´Maison des Templiers´, a Renaissance style building which dates from the 16th century.
