Cogolin is located between the foothills of the Maures mountains and the Golfe de Saint Tropez and takes its name from the French word ‘cougoul’ which refers to the ‘little rounded hill’ around which the town was originally founded. Unlike many of its neighbours, the town has developed in a rather sprawling fashion and modern Cogolin takes in several disparate settlements including Port Cogolin and Marines de Cogolin.
Cogolin‘s historic core is centered around the Place de la République which hosts the Saturday market and is the site of Hotel de Ville (town hall). Most of Cogolin‘s oldest building are located in the Old Town (vieux village) and include the 14th century Tour de ‘Horloge’, the now ‘clock less’ tower which dominates the old town, and the 15th century St Saveur Church as well as scores of vaulted passages and houses typified by portals fashioned from ancient serpentine and volcanic stones.
Port Cogolin and Marines de Cogolin are both located by the sea, approximately four kilometers from the old town and close to St Tropez. They each house marinas, with capacities of 180 and 1500 respectively, and both are populated by contemporary shops, restaurants, bars and boutiques that complement the more traditional facilities available in Cogolin itself.
