La Garde Freinet in the Var (83) is a beautiful medieval village in the forests of the Massif des Maures located close to the A8 motorway and about an hour north of Saint Tropez. Unique in every way La Garde Freinet is an eleventh century stone village with field stone houses, old fashioned street names, and a village square framed with restaurants and local art galleries shadowed only by a huge cross.

The inhabitants settles in la Garde Freinet in the Var in the early 13th Century building houses on the lower slopes of le Garde Freinet. The village in fact started to grow from the Place du Marché and the quarter of St Joseph. With the boom in the Cork industry La Garde Freinet’s growth really kicked in and in the late 19th century cork workers represented a ¼ of the population. The twisting lanes of the old village came after in the construction of the Aires and Place Neuve Quarters.

How to Get Here
La Garde Freinet is very easy to get to from the A8, as you can take the turn off to Le Luc and continue on the D558 which cuts through the forests on a very impressive mountain road to Le Garde Freinet. Airports would be Marseille, Nice Cote D'Azur or Toulon. The nearest train station would probably be in Le Luc.
Beaches in La Garde Freinet
La Garde Freinet is really in the forests in the back country nearly an hour from Saint Tropez and Pampelonne. Port Grimaud's beaches are probably the closest. There is a municipal swimming pool in La Garde Freinet, but if you are looking for beach life then you must pass through Grimaud and head towards the sea, either heading to Beauvallon, Sainte Maxime, or Port Grimaud.
