With a unique panorama and quaint streets that seem to dance among the flowers it is not surprising that Gassin in the Var (83) was once labeled the most beautiful village in France. Popular with local Tropeziens moving from the hectic bustle of Saint Tropez life, and visitors, Gassin is found 3 miles from the sea perched high on a rock overlooking vineyards, forests, and the azure waters of the Golphe de Saint Tropez. Gassin is famous for its restaurants, and the restaurants in the Place Dei Barry offer a romantic setting. Restaurants like le Vieux Gassin, Le Carpaccio, and the Micocoulier offer truffles, saint jaques, and delightful seafood dishes.
Gassin village is old, and roman and historical sites such as the Chapel Notre Dame, and the ramparts show the passing of time. Now Gassin is home to celebrities who have beautiful Gassin villas on the western side of the town. David Ginola, Emanuelle Beart, and Ines de La Fressanage all have had houses here.
History of Gassin
Gassin is considered the oldest villages in the Saint Tropez area with the name of Garcin being dated back to the 10th Century. The templiers build the tower on the rock, and one can to recognize leftovers of these walls on some streets , and doors. The footprint of the Knights Templar and a mysterious destiny rather , caused him to be known as the village of " witches " owing to a vision of a whitch who passed through the streets with hot coals in her hands.
Gassin’s coat of arms shows that a part of Gassin’s history was linked to the Castellane family. Indeed, in around 1300, Jacques de Castellane became the first seigneur of Garcin.
The plains surrounding Gassin were occupied in Neolithique times and archaeologists have unearthed fragments dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The Roman occupation brought security and prosperity to the region in the form of agricultural exploitations. Most traces have now disappeared but the commune of Gassin still boasts 18 important finds dating from the gallo-roman period, including a stone slab in la Chapelle Notre-Dame de Consolation which bears a drawing of a ship corresponding to the end of the 1st century.

How to Get Here
To get to Gassin you can come from the A8 either by the D558 passing through La Garde Freinet and Grimaud, or the new road from Le Muy via the D25. Once you get to the coastal road there could be traffic near to Sainte Maxime, so it might be worth using the D558. The closest airports are Nice Cote D'Azur, or Toulon Hyeres, and the closest train station is either at Les Arcs, or at Saint Raphael.
Beaches near Gassin
Gassin is surrounded by beaches and the sea so there are choices. On the south side you have the beautiful beaches of Gigaro, and Debarquement near La Croix Valmer, and to the east you have the Pampelonne Beaches and Escalet. Not far to the noth are the beaches of Port Grimaud.
