Children‘s Activities on the French Riviera
While the French Riviera has a well-known reputation for being the playground of the rich and famous, it is less well appreciated as a great place to take your children on holiday. However, as this short guide seeks to demonstrate, the Côte d‘Azur offers a host of activities that are extremely rewarding to all the family and to children in particular.
While the beaches of the Riviera are clearly one of its key attractions, all but the most docile of children will soon grow restless if they are confined to building sandcastles. Fortunately there are a huge range of water-sports available on the Riviera including, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, snorkeling and diving, all of which may be enjoyed by the family as a whole or by your children alone as part of an organized group.
Should you venture inland you will find a host of other water sports as well as a range of land-based activities. If you have children over the age of six, the Verdon Valley is a great destination where you can enjoy climbing, abseiling, river swimming, white-water rafting and canoeing as well as a canyoning, an amazing new sport that combines abseiling, swimming, jumping and water-sliding in a stunning natural environment.
There are a huge number of national parks and forests adjacent to the Côte d‘Azur that can be enjoyed by bike, horse and by foot and it is also worth checking out some of the great art tours that are available in the region. The ‘Côte d‘Azur-Through The Eyes of the Masters’ is an organized walking tour that retraces the footsteps of some of the world‘s greatest artists including Monet, Duffy, Renoir, Chagall and Bonnard, and allows participants to view reproductions of their paintings alongside the landscapes that they depict.
There are also a large number of more mainstream activities for families to enjoy. Marineland, located in Antibes, is Europe‘s largest marine park and hosts an array of shows involving Dolphins and Killer Whales as well as the chance to sea a host of creatures from the deep including various types of shark and a 1.5m wide giant mantra ray. The park at Aoubre, meanwhile, offers walking trails and mini-adventure trails that are perfect for small children. Challenging enough to give them a sense of achievement, but safe enough to keep your nerves at ease.
If you are thinking of taking your children on vacation to the French Riviera, why not consider renting an apartment or villa for the duration. Many rental villas come with their own private swimming pools and offer both more space and intimacy than most hotel rooms. Living in accommodation of this sort will also give children a more genuine experience of what it is like to live in France. |

The Best Local Beaches in Var
Stretching from Bandol, in the west, to St Raphael in the east, the Var coastline makes up the western half of the Côte d'Azur and combines the glamour of the Riviera with natural rugged beauty. Whether you prefer a perfectly manicured beach with waiter service, or a secluded cove, you are sure to find something to match your tastes on the Var coastline. In this short guide we describe the best beaches of this beautiful region.
Perhaps the most famous beach in the area is Pampelonne beach, which is located close to St Tropez. Pampelonne beach stretches for 5km, between Cap Camarat in the south, and Cap St Tropez, in the south, and comprises 27 private and public beaches spread over 67 acres. Facilities range from the highly exclusive beach-clubs such as "Club 55" and "Nikki Beach", to the family-friendly "Tiki-Club" which plays host to regular live music. Pampellone also has a large 'naturist' beach which remains as part of its strong 60's legacy.
Further along the coast to the west you will find the beaches of La Croix Valmer. There are a total of seven beaches here and each has its own character. The Plage du Débarquement, named after the Allied landings of 1944, offers wonderful views of the whole bay and hosts a number of activities and restaurants. The Plage d'Heraclée has a more wild look, but is also well served by activities and restaurants, as is the Plage de Gigaro. The beaches of Sylvabelle, Brouis, and Briande , meanwhile are far more isolated and are not served by restaurants or activities but do offer their own considerable rewards and tend to be much quieter than their counterparts.
There are also a range of beaches located on the Gulf of St Tropez which are particularly convenient for people staying in and around St Tropez and Ste Maxime. La Bouillabaisse is served by a restaurant of the same name and despite being located close to St Tropez, it enjoys an unpretentious family-friendly ambience. The Plage des Eléphants in Ste Maxime is another superb family-friendly beach and children will enjoy the fact that it was the setting of the classic children's book 'Le Voyage de Babar', which was written by Jean de Brunhoff during his stay in the town,
At the eastern end of the Var coast the twin towns of St Raphael and Frejus have four large beaches that are famous for their resorts, water sports, and general good times for all. The beaches are perfect for families with small children and activities on offer include snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing.
If you are a beach lover then the Côte d'Azur really is the perfect location for you. If, like so many, you fall in love with this region, then why not go one step further than vacationing and invest in local property. There are hundreds of properties available for sale and rental in the area and we would be delighted to help you with your search. |
